Dishing About Garden Walk

The Daily Dish on Atlantic.com sings the praises of Garden Walk Buffalo: “In recent years, too, Buffalo has become a site of the triumph of imagination over physical reality in two ways that have caught my heart. The first is the inkpool spread of neighborhoods that have gone mad with gardening. Really. Gardening, like happiness and obesity, is contagious, and urban pioneers on the West Side have inspired neighbors to garden and so attracted new urban pioneers. Call it clear, grow and build. The movement has been driven in large part by the mind-blowing Buffalo Garden Walk, America's best event of its kind, held the last weekend in July."

Buffalo Niagara: Feel the Flavor video

During the 30s, 40s, and 50s, any serious jazz musician who came through Buffalo had to stop by the Colored Musicians Club. Jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald were among the many stars to make music from its stage. The Colored Musicians Club stands today in its original location at 145 Broadway. Its members are still among the most talented and versatile musicians anywhere. They give free jazz lessons to community youth and hold weekly Sunday night jam sessions. Ring the bell and get buzzed up to the second floor for a truly original Buffalo nightlife experience.

The article dominated the front page of the Arts & Leisure section with a breathtaking photo of Daniel Burnham’s Ellicott Square Building as seen from Louis Sullivan’s Guaranty Building.
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Buffalo Preview

Frank Lloyd Wright is considered the greatest architect that America has ever produced but his genius was often overshadowed by scandal and tragedy usually brought on by his own indiscretions. As friends and clients deserted him because of his scandalous lifestyle, one man, Buffalo businessman Darwin Martin, stood by him and supported him both emotionally and financially for 30 years. Over the three decades, Martin became more than just a client or even a patron to Wright. He became a friend—some would argue the best friend that Wright ever had.
“Frank Lloyd Wright’s Buffalo” tells the story of their long friendship—a friendship that began in 1902 and ended with Darwin Martin’s death in 1935. Woven into the story is the signature architecture that was created as a result—the Larkin Administration Building, the Darwin Martin Estate, and the Martin summer home, Graycliff—all in Buffalo, New York.
