Buffalo landmarks to serve as a classroom of architectural appreciation

Buffalo BillsThe New York Times once called Buffalo’s architectural treasures “a textbook for a course in modern American buildings.” Jewels created by Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, H.H. Richardson, Frederick Law Olmsted and others are considered American masterpieces and serve as a classroom for architectural enthusiasts.

The Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier is looking to raise your architectural IQ with a series of lectures and tours called “Downtown Revealed: Appreciating Our Architecture.” The educational classes & tours will be held on Saturdays, January 27th until March 24th from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Market Arcade Film and Arts Centre, 639 Main Street. The tours offer various walking trips to great architectural structures in Buffalo where participants will experience and learn about some of the United States’ most interesting architecture.

 

Tour dates:
January 27: “Buffalo Architecture and History” Lecture.

February 3: “Green and Wicks: Buffalo’s Premier Architectural Firm” and “Terra Cotta in Architecture”            Lectures.

February 10: “Rise of the Buffalo Skyscraper” A two-hour tour of Buffalo’s commercial architecture.

February 17: “Romantic Buffalo: Greek and Gothic Revival” A lecture and tour of Richard Upjohn’s St.             Paul’s Cathedral.

February 24: “Buffalo’s Renewable Past: Architectural Restoration and Adaptive Reuse” A lecture and tour            of the Old Post office/ECC City Campus.

March 3: “Art Deco in Buffalo” A lecture and tour of City Hall.

March 10: “Modern Architecture in Buffalo” A lecture and one hour walking tour.

The cost of these tours is $10 per session and $50 for all 7 sessions (pre-registration only).
