Painter Francis Bacon’s haunting images to be featured in Albright-Knox Art Gallery exhibition

Francis Bacon: Paintings from the 1950s,Widely recognized as one of the most powerful and distinctive voices in post-World War II art, Francis Bacon’s compelling work will be on exhibit at the Albright-Knox from May 4 through July 29. The Albright-Knox is one of only two U.S. venues to host this remarkable exhibition.

During the 1950s, painter Francis Bacon began to formulate the iconography of his dark and troubled world in paint. The exhibition, “Francis Bacon: Paintings from the 1950s,” on view at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery May 4 - July 29, 2007, features nearly 50 paintings from the period in which Bacon was at the height of his creative powers.

“Francis Bacon: Paintings from the 1950s” takes a profoundly personal look at this fascinating period in Bacon's career and is the first exhibition to examine Bacon's formative works. Organized by Michael Peppiatt, a close friend of Bacon's, the exhibition provides a first-person perspective on the artist's emerging style in the first decades of his career through paintings, drawings, and a selection of archival materials that illustrate the artist's life and work.

Francis Bacon is widely recognized as one of the most powerful and distinctive voices in post-World War II art. His paintings from the 1950s will have a significant impact on all Albright-Knox visitors and create a museum experience that will not soon be forgotten.

The Albright-Knox Art Gallery is an outstanding center of modern and contemporary art.  Its permanent collection, which includes works by the great artists of the late 19th and the 20th centuries, as well as many emerging artists, has been cited as one of the world’s top international surveys of modern and contemporary painting and sculpture.
