Buffalo celebrates the 100th anniversary of Old Home Week with tours, exhibits and more.
Buffalo Old Home Week promotes pride of place and a good time for all.
Buffalo kicks off its 100th anniversary of Old Home Week on Sunday July 1st, 2007. The week-long event celebrates the Queen City’s uniqueness in which the pursuit of the American urban ideal is central to the future. The goals of the event are the focus on the progressive idealism found in grassroots activism, the promotion of a new economy that encourages entrepreneurial spirit, the celebration of Buffalo’s unique sense of place, history and thriving arts community, and the harnessing of enthusiasm of college student and college-educated populace to encourage a vibrant and diverse marketplace of ideas.
This event features over 25 activities and begins with Tapestry Buffalo on July 1st at the Central Terminal, an event featuring the dynamic people who make Buffalo a great place to live. Then, cruise on down for the Canada Day Boat Tour and celebrate Canada Day by discovering the rich history of two great nations at the point of entry to the upper Great Lakes.
Other highlights include a free tour to see the brand-new, state-of-the-art New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences on July 2nd. A recently completed $52 million project, the Center houses researchers who are exploring the newest options and medical devices for cancer, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease.
On Thursday, July 5th, take the family out for Kids Days at the Zoo. The Buffalo Zoo is the third oldest zoo in the country and also the most visited cultural institution in Erie County. Special animal shows, feeding opportunities and kid’s activities are taking place all day.
Friday July 6th is the City of Light Bus Tour. Come see Buffalo as it was in 1901 when it played host to the Pan-American Exposition and boasted some of the nation’s tallest skyscrapers, most magnificent architecture and luxuriously wide boulevards.
Then, stop by the renowned Albright-Knox Art Gallery for the Gusto at the Gallery free Fridays. The focus on this Friday will be Buffalo’s past and future, featuring memorabilia from Buffalo Old Home Week 1907 that will be on display. There will also be a Buffalo beer, Niagara wine and Loganberry tasting on the back steps which overlook the picturesque Delaware Park and Hoyt Lake.
