A Northern Light Switched On
Beyond/In Western New York biennial illuminates the region’s burgeoning art scene
12 Western New York Art Galleries to partake in the opening festivities
Opening the weekend of September 14th, Beyond/In Western New York will come to life for the second time, showcasing the artwork of 50 artists in 12 Buffalo-area galleries. Featuring an assortment of media, the artists selected represent the best of new and established talent from throughout Western New York, Central New York, Southern Ontario, Northeastern Ohio, and Northwestern Pennsylvania.
Receiving more than 950 submissions with nearly half from the lower Ontario region, curatorial representatives from 12 Western New York visual art institutions traveled to more than 100 artists’ studios to make the final decision on what would be showcased in the exhibition.
The Albright-Knox Art Gallery, one of North America’s premier contemporary art museums, will highlight 14 of these artists. The works span a spectrum of media from traditional drawings to abstract performance and multimedia installations.
Twelve of Western New York’s art galleries will be participating in this exciting event. During the weekend of September 14th, the showcased artists and curators at corresponding art galleries will be celebrating this show with the public. On Friday, September 14th, the CEPA Gallery, El Museo, Hallwalls and Squeaky Wheel will host opening celebrations for Beyond/In Western New York 2007. Carnegie Art Center, Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University, University at Buffalo’s Center for the Arts, Buffalo Arts Studio, University at Buffalo Anderson Gallery and Big Orbit Gallery will host the Saturday openings. On Sunday the celebration moves to the Albright Knox and Burchfield-Penney Art Center.
An illustrated catalogue that includes curatorial comments and illustrations of each artist’s work will be available at each institution. For more information and locations, visit www.albrightknox.org/exhibitions/WNY2007/index.html
