Spend a weekend in Wright’s Buffalo

Immerse yourself in the life and times of Frank Lloyd Wright

Buffalo BillsBuffalo's ongoing cultural renaissance takes a major step forward on the weekend of November 3-5 when the first ever Frank Lloyd Wright's Buffalo Immersion Weekend takes place. Highlighted by a rare and special performance by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra of "Shining Brow," the opera based on the life of the charismatic Wright, the weekend promises to offer visitors an entertaining and enlightening look at the life of this great American architect and the work he left behind in Buffalo. A special package featuring tickets to the performance, VIP tours, accommodations and dinner is being offered by tour planners Ashton-Drye Associates of Buffalo.

Presented by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Martin House Restoration Corporation, and the Graycliff Conservancy, in partnership with Ashton-Drye Associates, the weekend is designed to delight architecture afficionados and Wright buffs with the unusual opportunity to see his life depicted on stage along with visits to three distinctive Wright sites and stops at Buffalo's other architectural jewels.

The highlight of the three-day, two-night weekend is a gala evening celebrating the work, life and times of Frank Lloyd Wright at the renowned Kleinhans Music Hall. The climax of the evening will be the presentation by the BPO of Daron Hagen's opera, "Shining Brow," conducted by Music Director JoAnn Falletta.

This acclaimed opera was originally commissioned by the Madison Opera in Madison, Wisconsin with permission from the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Upon its premier in 1993, The New York Times called it a "daring adventure," that "exuded intelligence."

The weekend package includes a tour of Wright's Graycliff Estate in Derby, a tour of Buffalo's architectural treaures, featuring Louis Sullivan's Guaranty Building and Wright's Blue Sky Mausoleum in Forest Lawn Cemetery, and a concluding tour of the Darwin D. Martin House Complex on Sunday morning.

Organized by Sandy Starks of Ashton-Drye Associates, the Frank Lloyd Wright's Buffalo Weekend builds on the extremely well received tours the Foundation at Roycroft has been conducting for Elderhostel for several years of the Roycroft Campus and Buffalo's architecture.
