Hallwalls showcases Julio Cesar Morales’s The Year of the Diamond Dogs
Hallwalls presents The Year of the Diamond Dogs from artist Julio Cesar Morales, showing through December 15th. A Hallwalls Artist in Residence Project, The Year of the Diamond Dogs is an avant-garde media project that includes multi-channel video, sculpture, signs and sound. The musical component was composed by Los Creamators and contains additional audio of the artist’s aunt singing obscure Mexican songs.
Described as a “sonic and visual landscape that evokes the dystopian future” the exhibit explores elements described in George Orwell’s novels and David Bowie’s music. In keeping with his Latin roots, Morales has chosen to use a perspective composed of mutated sound samples of Diamond Dogs, language, typography, and idiosyncratic symbols from the Latin American urban landscape. These elements combine to create a dangerous topography that evokes issues of immigration, alienation and surveillance.
Established in 1975, Hallwalls is renowned in North American art circles for its exhibitions of contemporary art, film and video screenings, live jazz, new music and performances. It is located in Babeville, formerly known as The Church on Delaware Avenue. For more information, call 716-854-1694 or visit http://www.hallwalls.org.
