Two Times The Laughs

Comedies at area theatres fight the winter blues

Buffalo BillsAccompanying the new year are two upcoming comedic plays from Buffalo’s vibrant theatre scene that will surely put a smile on those in attendance.

On January 5, 2007 to February 4, 2007, the Kavinoky Theatre will unveil the Queen City premiere of “The Fourth Wall” written by one of Buffalo favorite sons (and nationally revered playwright) A.R. Gurney. In a love letter of sorts to the theatre, Gurney utilizes the stage to comically explore our place in the world today. Set in the living room of a contemporary, upper-class, Buffalo couple, the author displays his wit on such topics as advertising, politics, and even the very audience who attends the performance.

The New Yorker said, “some damn clever writing…Constructed to illuminate the nature of the dramatic form while raising questions about the current state of the theatre in America…the evening is debonair, thought-provoking, and funny.”

“The Kav”, as it is known in local theatre circles, is located at 320 Porter Avenue on the campus of D’Youville College.

The Irish Classical Theatre Company production of “Enjoying the Game” will appear from January 12, 2007 to February 11, 2007. The play is 2005 Nobel Prize winner Harold Pinter’s first full-length comedy.

The play has been described as, “A birthday party for a boarder at a seedy seaside house turns into an ominous, threatening and dark celebration of the incomprehensible forces that ultimately reduce him to a gibbering fool.  In a linguistic tour de force, Pinter's themes of alienation and surrealistic confusions are reminiscent of the great comic absurdist traditions of Beckett and Ionesco.”

The Irish Classical Theatre features in-the-round seating that puts the entire audience within 20 feet of the performers. Located in the heart of Buffalo’s theatre district, the Irish Classical Theatre Company aims to present the greatest works of dramatic literature:  international classics; modern plays of exceptional merit; and Irish plays, both traditional and contemporary.
