FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT TOURS:
The Focus Tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Darwin Martin House Complex is held every 4th Saturday, year-round. The tour reveals how the Martin House is the creation of a brilliant architect and his client.  Expert storyteller, Duane Churchill, unravels Frank Lloyd Wright’s genius in weaving a portrait of Darwin Martin into the fabric of this breathtaking residence.  Visitors also have the opportunity to visit buildings in the Martin House complex that are not included on the basic tour, including the Barton House and Gardener’s Cottage.

MUSEUM OPENING:
After almost ten years of planning, fundraising and construction, the New Burchfield Penney Art Center will open to the public on November 22, 2008 with round-the-clock festivities. Designed by Gwathmey, Siegel & Associates Architects, the 84,000 square foot building is dedicated to the art and vision of Charles E. Burchfield and distinguished artists of Western New York State.  It houses more than 7,500 works and contains the largest public collection of works by one of America’s greatest watercolorists, Charles E. THE TIMES ON BUFFALO ARCHITECTURE:
Buffalo’s amazing collection of 19th and 20th Century architecture was featured on the cover of the Nov. 16, 2008 edition of the New York Times Arts & Leisure section in an article aptly titled “Saving Buffalo’s Untold Beauty”. The article dominated the front page of the Arts & Leisure section with a breathtaking photo of Daniel Burnham’s Ellicott Square Building as seen from Louis Sullivan’s Guaranty Building. The subhead makes the case for Buffalo right up front: “The Home to Some of the Greatest American Architecture Tries to Balance the Past With the Future.” Read the entire article and check out the slide show.   More...

 

BUFFALO SPOTLIGHT

ART DECO ARCHITECTURE:
Preservation Buffalo Niagara hosts free daily tours of Buffalo’s City Hall, one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the United States. City Hall is notable for its decorative murals illustrating significant elements of the area’s history, a distinctive portico frieze, ornate Council chambers and an observation deck that offers spectacular views of Lake Erie, the Niagara River and surrounding city and countryside. Tours meet Monday-Friday, year-round at 12 p.m. at City Hall, 65 Niagara Square in downtown Buffalo.  More...

 

WALKS, TALKS & TOURS

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT ARCHITECTURE:
With the turning of the leaves, now is the perfect time to plan a tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s scenic Graycliff Estate.  Plan a visit for the fall holiday season to this architectural jewel that offers sweeping views of Lake Erie, Canada and beyond. Graycliff is closed Thanksgiving Day, but will open with an extended tour schedule on Friday, November 28th, and tours will continue all weekend, with more five tours everyday, beginning at 11 a.m.  Reservations are necessary for all tours.
